Bill Proposed to Lower Drinking Age to 18
Food & Drink, Politics, news February 29th, 2008I hear about this on the radio this morning coming to work. This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Do they really think this will make things better? In my opinion the only people who should be able to drink when they are 18 are our Military Men and Women. If they can die for our country then they should be able to drink anytime they are in uniform.
Convinced that existing laws aren’t working, state Sen. Hinda Miller has taken a first step toward rolling back the legal age by introducing a bill that would establish a task force to weigh the pros and cons and make a recommendation to the Legislature later this year.

This sure makes perfect sense, NOT! Hey lets raise the driving age to 18 to decrease the number of teen traffic accidents and lower the drinking age to 18. Now our kids will be able to drink and drive at the same time.

It’s interesting that kids can drive racecars long before they are able to get a driver’s license.
Lots of different angles for debate here…

LOTS of angles for debate.
I’m from Ireland (legal age 18) where there is a huge teeange drinking problem, it is normal for 14-17 years to drink at the weekends, and generally get smashed. This leads to other social problems, drunk & disorderly, police resources used, petty crime etc.
I’m now living in the Netherlands (legal age 16) and I can honestly say I’ve never seen a kid puking up on the street, or fighting, or getting up to ANY unsociable behaviour in almost 7 years.
The difference in these two cases is the education of kids regards alcohol, it’s a part of life, fact. They don’t make it a mystery or a forbidden fruit, and therefore kids tends to not want to rebel and try it out, or go overboard when they do.
Just my 2 (euro) cents

Hmm your recommendation may have just solved our decreasing enrollment in the armed forces.
But seriously - I think it’s ridiculous that you can die for your country but can’t enjoy a friggin brew for your sacrifices!!

I live in Vancouver, near the border to the United States. In Canada, the legal age is 19. Every weekend HUNDREDS of American kids drive across the border and drink at one of the many clubs and bars located within an hour of the border. It’s scary to think that many of them will be driving home each night, you know?
That said, I am completely happy with the legal limit being 19…I’m would not support an increase in drinking age here in Canada.
Besides, I was drinking when I was 15. Who cares what the legal age is - if a kid wants to drink, they’ll find a way.

@Everyone, thanks for all your comments. Its interesting to hear about how things are in different countries. I just cannot see how things would be better (atleast in this area ) if the age was lowered. I think at first it would be worse but after some time maybe once it was not so new kids would not do it since it was not illegal anymore.

exactly, it would most certainly not work right away to lower the age.
It takes a certain amount of social reconditioning to breed a more adult way of thinking around alcohol. From those teaching and those learning.
