Our Petless Family
Family, Random February 20th, 2008We are a petless family. Its not because we don’t like animals, we do, we just like different types and do not share the same views on them.
Kids view - They want pets, they really do not care what type, altho Twin 1 is seriously afraid of dogs so I think she would rather have a cat.
Queens view - She wants cats because they are easy to care for and you don’t see them. She has had cats in the past and also one dog that she had to get rid of. If she did ever get a dog it would be an Alaskan Husky. If we did get a dog then she would want it to stay in the basement.
Kings view - I really HATE cats, they are totally useless. Do they help protect your home? Nope. Can you take them to the park to pick up chicks? Nope. What’s the point then. Only problem is that you need to pick up the crap after they do their jobs. This is the one reason I can do without getting a dog right now, I HATE picking that up, made me wanna puke when I used to do it when I was younger.
When I was growing up we had a total of 3 dogs. The first dog was a German Shepard and wolf mix, it was about half the size of a Shepard but still had attitude. It was a great family dog, we have picture of the dog laying on ther ground while I wrestled with it. If you look at the picture the dog is looking up as if to say ” come on kid can’t you see I was trying to take a nap “. She was a great protector of the house, luckily we never had any intruders but she was always aware of what was happening outside and around the house. When my Dad was not home at night, if you heard a noise you would just have to look at the dog, if she was still quiet then there was nothing to worry about.
Our second dog was a Cocker Spaniel, not a good protector but a good family dog nonetheless. We had this dog for about a month before we got our 3rd dog, it was a Shepard/Terrier mix. My aunt brought it over one weekend because the place she worked at was going to drown the dog ( I know sick people ) and she knew my mother would not turn it away. If anyone remembers the TV show Boomer, that is what he looked like. He was a good family dog and protector when needed. Smart as hell, we would play football and hide and seek with it. He would line up on defense and cover receivers, when we played hide and seek we would hide and then call the dog to find us. One time I remember we were hiding under a kids swimming pool and he stuck his nose under the pool, lifted it up and crawled in to find us.
These two dogs were inseparable, they would go everyplace together and looked out for one another. If they got out of the yard and the other was not right by their side they would come back and look for the other. Sadly they both got sick when they were about 13 years old and we had to put them down, it was the only humane thing to do. It was very rough on everyone.
After that my parents didn’t get any more animals, they wanted to go on vacations and didn’t want to have to worry about finding someone to watch them like we had to do with the others. My parents did not believe in taking them to a kennel so that was out of the question for when they wanted to go on a trip.
So until our kids agree to pick up dog shit from the yard and the Queen agrees to let the dog have the run of the house ( with the exception of the beds and furniture ) there will be no dogs. I don’t see us ever getting a cat either since I find them worthless, although I did offer to get a cat last year. The deal was that we could get a cat but then we were not going to get a swimming pool. Everyone opted for the pool which we didn’t end up getting anyway.
We have agreed that once I get the basement finished then we will get a big tropical fish tank, filled with crazy fish, it was a unamimous decision, not easy with 6 people living in this house.
( I am sure that the Queen will have a big long post on this subject with her point of view )

YOU ARE DAMN RIGHT I AM GOING TO POST!! First of all my DH, I happen to love cats BECAUSE

SEE!! I got so flustered that I hit submit somehow!! I love cats because they are cute and cuddly, they love to snuggle with you, I love the sound of them purring, and I love how they lounge around like they have the best life ever. I don’t like them because you don’t see them what kind of crap is that!! I “prefer” cats over dogs because the dogs are more like children, they NEED attention more than a cat does. You have to walk the dog pick up the poop, where as with a cat you have the litter box, I would much rather clean the box than to pick up poop as I am walking the dog. I do love certain dogs but I REFUSE to let a dog run MY HOUSE! The smell up the house. If we were to live in a state that has warm weather then the dog would have a nice dog house. But I will not have a dog running around in my house, its hard to keep my house clean as it is with 6 kids. Nice memories of your dogs though I will have to post one about my life with my little cat.

R’s right. You cannot let a dog run the house. Best to get them as a puppy and teach them who’s master. Or else they’re very hard to break later on. Dogs are meant to follow. And yes, dogs do smell. But people who have dogs never seem to notice it. That’s the one thing I’m going to have to pay extra attention too - keeping a clean pup in my clean house. It’s good to get a dog to teach kids responsibility, but so often the kids just get bored with the upkeep and the responsibility falls on the parents. You’ve got a busy house as it is, so I think the fishtank sounds mighty nice (and a cat!) for now.

I knew this would be a heated topic. What is the point of having a dog and not letting it be part of the family. Having a dog stay outside in a dog house is just plain CRUEL. Keeping it in the basement is pointless, how is it going to protect the house if its locked up. Our dogs had the run of the house, beds and all. I can understand not wanting them on the bed and furniture, but if you are not going to let them roam the house then don’t get a dog. And NO Kate there will be NO CATS, unless we keep it in the basement and once I finish the basement then the cat will have to go outside into the cathouse.

HA!Keep talking crap dude and YOU will be the one in the dog house. Has anyone ever heard of a cat house outside? If the dog roams around the house it is more than likely going to be on furniture. My little Cinnamon was trained not to go on furniture unless it was my bed or the kitchen chairs but the chairs were always tucked into the table. He never got into any trouble. The other thing I hate is when dogs bark constantly, URGH!! It is so loud, at least with a cat it is like a whisper when they meow. So yes it comes down to NO DOGS, NO CATS :p
Just a fish tank full of fish.
I will not allow a dog to run my house. Your brother has his dog(s) and kids run his house and look at how they live, GROSS!!

Am I commenting or stepping into a family feud?? haha!! Chiming in on the Pro-Dog, anti-cat. I have had both. Cats act entitled. Dogs work for your love even when they don’t need to. If it helps any, my two dogs have full run of the house and are really good at staying off the furniture.
But fish rule. I had 15 aquariums in the house at one point in time. And when fish die, it’s a lot less traumatic for the kiddos. And they are cheap (after the initial fishtank and equipment investment). A perfect gateway pet.
