Art Collector, Elvis Fan, Accountant
Money February 11th, 2008This weekend we made our annual trip to get our taxes done. While most people dread this we actually look forward to going, not because we are sadistic but because we most always get money back and could use it to get some projects done around the house.
Words cannot describe our tax guy, you really need to see everything to fully appreciate the wierdness. He is a crotchety older man, unkept, gray hair, pants pulled up way too high, you know the look. His office in a based in a part of town that is mostly less than middle income, reaking of incense and stockpiled full of Native American art. But I cannot forget to mention the Elvis memorabilia also, most notably the 10 or so singing Elvis teddy bears still in boxes. I told the Queen that we need to get all this stuff and sell it on eBay, we could make a fortune.
This year when we went in, there was a younger couple in there ( well younger than us ), it was their first time, you could tell by the apprehension in their voices to do what he was suggesting. Their previous accountant was from what I could tell by overhearing him talk was also a Travel agent. No I was not purposely trying to ease drop, our accountant just talks that loud. He went on and on about how their previous accountant was a moron and idiot, a bad travel agent much less an accountant. $80 to do your taxes?! He did an $80 job too! I have not charged $80 in 80 years! His going rate is about $250, I know seems high to me too, I really like the $80 figure more. The first time we went there he charged us $400 and I swore we were never going there again, that was 5 years ago.
I asked the Queen what she figured we were getting back, she asked how much do you wanna get back, I told her some insane number and she shot it down. I told her I know, but I can dream can’t I?
Since tax guy was still busy he told his secretary to take us, nice woman in her mid 30’s to low 40’s I would imagine, have no idea how she stays working for him. She punched the numbers into the computer and gave us a number that was $2000 higher than the ridiculous number I told the Queen I wanted. ( I guess it pays to have too many kids ) Nice!! Looks like I get my deck and the kids get their swimming pool this year.
We exchanged pleasantries with everyone and left VERY happy. Cannot wait to see what type of entertainment he will have for us next year.
